I am not a real inspector

A fascinating day this week: I co-observed 9 lessons with an Ofsted inspector. We debriefed, moderated and came to the conclusion that there is a significant correlation between official lesson grades and creative approaches. He observed against Ofsted criteria, I observed against creative T&L. We agreed 8 times and disagreed once. But we didn't fight. His clipboard was bigger than mine anyway, so it was a non starter. Going to investigate this congruence more over the next few weeks. Anyone had similar experience?

Yes indeed - HMI feedback about lessons which were judged outstanding at my school last year was all about setting the children up to be independent learners - them getting on with thinking and talking and doing. An engaging, creative lesson structure which layers up the learning as the lesson progresses (such as the 1,2,4 model) hands the learning baton to the children. Conversely, we've all been in lessons which are sinking because we are doing all the work, rather than the children. 'Too much teacher talk' or, heaven forbid, ' too much reliance on worksheets' must be the two most quoted phrases on lower graded lessons.
